New leader in Sarawak brings fresh agenda

The CJA Sarawak branch has elected Nancy Nais, seated third left, as its new chairwoman, succeeding Alice Wee, who has led the branch since 2015.

Outlining her vision, Nancy said the new committee would focus on ethical reporting standards, professional development, and international collaboration.

“The role of journalists is especially critical today, with unprecedented challenges. I look forward to supporting our members and encouraging excellence in storytelling,” she said.

Having served three consecutive terms as secretary since 2018, during which she coordinated numerous training programmes and public engagement initiatives, Nancy brings a wealth of experience to her new role.

She also announced plans to strengthen CJA Sarawak’s corporate social responsibility programmes, continuing the branch’s tradition of community involvement beyond the newsroom.

Meanwhile, outgoing chairwoman Alice reflected on the association’s achievements under her tenure, including educational media workshops and the successful ‘Breaking News Run’, organised with the Kuching Division Journalist Association , which drew 600 participants.

The newly elected executive committee comprises vice-chairman Aden Nagrace, secretary Dr Malia Taibi, vice-secretary Angeline Lim, treasurer Bong Siak Boon, and vice-treasurer Ronnie Teo. Committee members are Alice Wee, Caroline Jackson, Chang Lee Fong, Francis Chan, Jack Wong, Letitia Samuel, and Adeline Liong, with Liu Chin Sui appointed as auditor.

We stand for free, honest and unhindered journalism that informs the public without fear or favour. Responding to acute threats to free speech and journalists’ safety the CJA leads a broad-based civil society campaign for effective legal protections and accountable government. In a landmark decision taken in Samoa in October 2024 the 56 heads of government pledged to implement a new 11-point set of Commonwealth Principles on Freedom of Expression and the Role of the Media. https://tinyurl.com/5n6j8v73
